The concept of criticism varies according to the various critical theories. Comment • Criticism is derived from the greek word meaning “judgment”, hence, criticism is the exercise of judgment on works of literature.an its function is to show the merits and demerits of the work of art and finally to evaluate its artistic worth. • Aristotle believes “they wholly mistake who think the nature of criticism is to find the fault” Aristotle was first instituted the criticism, and was meant to be a standard of judgment, the best part of it, is to observe those excellences which should delight a reasonable reader. • Joseph Addison states “the true critic will dwell on excellences rather than imperfections.” • Vector Hugo maintains “is the work good or bad is the critic’s domain?” • George saint burg points out “with the goodness or badness, the success or ill success. Of literature from the purely literary point of view.” • Mathew Arnold contends that “criticism is a disinterested endeavor to learn and propagate the best that is known and thought in the world.” • Professor Spingarn believes that “the sole task of criticism is to answer three questions: what has the artist tried to express? / How has he succeeded in expressing it ? / was it worth expressing?” • I.A.Richards maintains that “ to set up as a critic is to set up as a judge of value. • T.s.Eliot, in his essay “the function of criticism.”, he states that “when he say criticism , he means of course in this place the commentation an exposition of works of art by means of written by means of written words. For the general use of the word “criticism” to mean such writings, as Mathew Arnold uses it in his essay, I shall presently make several qualifications.no exponent of criticism (in this limited sense) has, I presume, ever made the preposterous assumption that criticism is an autotelic activity. • I don’t deny that art may be affirmed to serve ends beyond itself, but art is not required to be aware of these ends, and indeed performs its function, whatever that may be indifference to the criticism on the other hand , must always proves an end in view, which, roughly speaking, appears to be the elucidation of works of art and the correction of taste.
